Position Purpose:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Law and Advocacy Teacher to join our upper school team. This teacher will be responsible for teaching students the foundational principles of law, criminal justice, and the legal system while fostering advocacy skills. The ideal candidate will have a passion for civic education, a strong understanding of legal concepts, and the ability to inspire students to engage in justice and advocacy activities. The teacher will also lead the Mock Trial team and Youth & Government program, providing students with opportunities to develop legal skills, critical thinking, public speaking, and leadership abilities.

POSITION OUTCOMES/EXPECTATIONS:

Curriculum Development and Instruction:

  • Design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive law and advocacy curriculum that aligns with state and national education standards.
  • Teach courses in law, criminal justice, legal principles, civil rights, ethics, advocacy, and related subjects.
  • Use diverse teaching methods to ensure all students understand and can apply legal concepts.
  • Develop lesson plans and classroom activities that engage students and promote critical thinking.
  • Stay up to date with changes in laws, legal trends, and relevant educational methodologies.
  • Plan, organize, and lead the Mock Trial team, preparing students for local, regional, and state competitions.
  • Coordinate with legal professionals or guest speakers to provide insights and mentorship to students.
  • Oversee and manage the debate and mock trial teams.
  • Actively participate in the Professional Learning Community (PLC) process at CPA.
  • Integrates the Christian worldview in all areas of instruction that is in alignment with CPA’s biblical worldview

Student Advocacy and Engagement:

  • Encourage students to engage in meaningful advocacy.
  • Provide students with opportunities for involvement in mock trials, debates, and other legal-related competitions.
  • Coach students in public speaking, argumentation, and legal research techniques.
  • Assist students in developing advocacy projects, including outreach to the community or relevant government bodies.

Classroom Management:

  • Establish a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment where students feel encouraged to express their opinions.
  • Ensure that classroom rules are followed and that students are actively participating in learning activities.
  • Provide individual support to students as needed, addressing their academic needs and personal concerns related to their studies.

Assessment and Feedback:

  • Develop and administer quizzes, tests, and assignments that assess students' understanding of legal principles and advocacy skills.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students to help them improve academically and personally.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and behavior.

Collaboration and Professional Development:

  • Collaborate with fellow teachers, school administrators, and community partners to support students' learning and advocacy activities.
  • Participate in school meetings, committees, and professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills.
  • Work with other educators to integrate law-related topics into broader interdisciplinary projects or initiatives.

Community and Parent Involvement:

  • Foster relationships with parents and guardians to keep them informed of their child's progress in law and advocacy studies.
  • Serve as a resource for students seeking further information about legal careers, internships, or community advocacy opportunities.
  • Active involvement in school and community events, including opportunities for field trips or guest speakers.
Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Law, Political Science, Education, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of legal systems, principles, and criminal justice.
  • Experience in teaching, law, or advocacy-related work (preferred).
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to engage students in critical thinking and complex discussions.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage classroom activities and schedules.
  • A passion for teaching and fostering students' interest in law and advocacy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in teaching high school students or leading extracurricular activities.
  • Knowledge of current events and their legal or social implications.
  • Familiarity with student-centered teaching strategies and differentiated instruction.
  • Previous experience with competitive Mock Trial teams or Model United Nations (MUN).

Physical:

  • Requires standing and walking intermittently throughout a significant portion of the day (up to 2/3 of the day)
  • Must be able to quickly respond to student need in the event of an emergency which may require more mobility such as running or physically moving up to at least 20 lbs
  • Ability to frequently lift up to 10 lbs on a regular basis
